RFC's Next Ride
Wildcat Spring, East of Camp Verde and North of Payson, off of HWY 87.

From Phoenix, go up I-17 to the Cottonwood/Camp Verde exit and turn right this turns onto SR260 and misses most of the town of Camp Verde. (This takes you by the golden arches)

or you can take the General Crook Trail exit and turn right/east follow to SR260 (this misses McDonalds)

This picture shows the star at Strawberry, AZ the campsite is north of Strawberry.

(Cottonwood/CampVerde)

At the stop light, on the exit, turn right/east (toward MCDONALDS) on SR260 and follow it to AZ 87.  Turn north on AZ 87 and go to mile marker 280. Turn left on FR 616 (No sign here) and drive to the Campground. Turn into the campground and park.

This trip is backwoods camping, you bring it in, you take it out.

  • Horses need to be picketed or somehow contained.  (Overnight in a trailer, tied out during the day)

  • The Campsite does not require reservations, so we must get there first to save the spot for all the people.

  • The area does not have any facilities, or water.  Bring your own water and I am sure you can find someone to borrow facilities from or use a tree.

  • Meals are on your own, but we may use the same campfire if one is permitted.

Below you can enlarge the picture by clicking on it.

You are approaching the intersection of HWY 260 and HWY. You are on HWY 260

Slow down.

You will turn left here to go north on HWY 87

Ok here we go north on HWY 87
Just after Mile Marker 280 turn left onto FS616.  This road is not marked, but as the picture shows it is within site of MM280 on HWY 87 north.
After turning onto FS616 you should see a gravel pit on your right
If you look straight ahead you will see the road through a gate which should be open.
Once through the gate and sown the road a ways you will see a fork or a Y in the road take the right hand side road
Here it is turn right
Ok, just a little middle of the way check, you should see this sign after a couple of miles.
The next sign you see is next to the campsite.
Take the left hand turn here to get into the campsite
Behind the trees you should see some horses and trailers and RV's pull into the circle and start setting up.  If no one is here we sill be soon.

Note:  There are two campsites we use.  The one shown here or the one that is just beyond this one up the hill.  The one up the hill is bigger and can hold more people.

Double click on the picture on the left to get a map of the area.
